Message from the Dean

Professor Masaru Uchiyama

A total of 457 students from Asia and all over the world are currently studying at the Tohoku University School of Engineering and make up about 30 percent of the university’s entire international student body. Our outstanding teaching staff and advanced facilities and equipment provide an ideal environment for conducting leading-edge research. To respond to the diverse needs of students from overseas, the School of Engineering is developing various degree programs in English only, backed up by our high research and teaching standards.
In October 2001, we established the International Doctoral Program with the aim of fostering professionals who will become the core of an international network of engineers and researchers in the future. We also plan to establish International Mechanical Engineering postgraduate programs (master’s and doctoral) in October 2010 and an undergraduate program in October 2011. In addition, the International Materials Science and Engineering Master’s Program is scheduled to be launched in October 2010. By teaching basic knowledge and skills such as problem-solving ability mainly in the fields of mechanical engineering and materials science, these programs will nurture experts who can play an active role in the international arena.
I very much hope you will take the opportunity to take a program in English at the Tohoku University School of Engineering.
